Reclaiming Your Right to Rest

The Front Porch Invitation

As I sit here typing away and watching the dawn emerge from behind the clouds, I realize now why our elders loved their front porches. I'm 35 years young and never desired a front porch as much as I do now. Just imagine it...you wake up early (or maybe you've been up and had a very rough night's sleep like I did), peel yourself out of your warm bed, throw on your coziest robe and slippers, drag yourself into the kitchen, maybe turn that little light on that's above the stove and under the microwave (if it's anything like mine) just enough to see what you're doing, make yourself a hot cup of tea (or coffee if that's your preference), open the front door, grab your throw blanket and sit out on that crisp front porch just in time to watch the sun rise. I don't know about you, but that sounds divine to me.

The Weight of Motherhood and Missed Rest

I always speak on being a single mother of twins and how it can be beyond draining most days. One thing I've come to quickly realize is just how important it is to take the time to rest. Any chance you can get. People say, "nap when the babies nap," but do we ever really take heed to that simple yet critical piece of advice?? I know I didn't at first! I came up with every excuse in the book as to why I couldn't rest when they rested. I had to catch up on laundry, dishes, prep dinner, wash my behind! Lol. Everything under the sun, but REST. Now, my neglected health is trying to catch up with me and forcing me to refocus. Refocus on reclaiming my right to rest, because rest truly is a right that we all have, but we all have taken advantage of in the least beneficial of ways.

Learning That Rest Is Revolutionary

The older I get, the more I see that rest is not just a pause — it’s an act of rebellion in a world that tells us we have to constantly go, go, go. Especially as women, and even more so as single mothers, we’re told that our value comes from how much we sacrifice and how much we produce. But the truth? Rest is sacred. Rest restores our mind, body, and spirit in ways nothing else can. Choosing to rest, even for a moment, is a way of saying, “I matter too.” It’s revolutionary to honor yourself enough to slow down.

Creating Space for Stillness

What I’ve learned is that rest doesn’t always have to be long naps or early bedtimes (though those are golden when you can get them). Rest can be found in the small rituals we create for ourselves — brewing tea slowly instead of rushing, pausing to watch the sunrise, listening to the soft hum of the world waking up around us. These little spaces of stillness are where we refill our cups. They remind us that even in chaos, we deserve peace.

🌸 Tea Ritual for Rest

Tonight, or tomorrow morning, choose a tea that feels like a hug in a cup. From my Comfort Corner™ Collection, I recommend Calmed Core™ — a grounding blend crafted to steady emotions and invite deep relaxation. Brew a cup at 205°F for 5–7 minutes, then sit in silence with your journal or on your porch and allow each sip to remind you of this truth: rest is your right.
